Palermo and surroundings
Monte Pellegrino is the soul of Palermo, it protects the city of the Palermitans, who in its grandeur, place faith and hope.
"It is the most beautiful promontory in the world." So wrote Wolfgang Goethe during his travel diary in Sicily.
Built in 1934, initially designed as a hotel by order of Cavaliere Michele Utveggio, a jewel of the Art Nouveau style, built on Mount Pellegrino, at an altitude of 346 metres with a breathtaking view of the city of Palermo and its surroundings.
The architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile begins the construction of the Teatro Massimo, on January 12, 1875 the first stone is laid. Giuseppe Verdi attends the ceremony. In 1891 Basile dies, his son Ernesto will complete the work.
